The new $150 million concert hall at Oxford University has chosen its first director. The latest Stephen A. Schwarzman Centre for the Humanities, scheduled to debut in 2025, welcomes John Fulljames.
Beginning later this month, he will be in charge of the university’s Humanities Cultural Programme (HCP), which will be housed in the center.
Before this, Mr. Fulljames served as the Royal Danish Orchestra’s and Royal Danish Opera’s opera director.
He held that position from 2017 to the beginning of this year. He also started The Opera Group, which collaborated with London’s Young Vic.
A 500-seat music hall, a 250-seat theater, and a 100-seat area for experimental performances will all be featured in the new center.
John Fulljames expressed his excitement about the “exceptional opportunity to lead a multidisciplinary arts center.”
I view this as an opportunity to collaborate with a whole new generation of artists and enterprises and support them in doing things that have never been done before, the man said, in addition to bringing something fresh to Oxford.
The HCP seeks to “bring to the city the most celebrated performances and up-and-coming artists from various cultural sectors.”
Stephen A. Schwarzman, the chairman, chief executive, and co-founder of financial firm Blackstone, donated £175 million to support the program, which debuted in 2019, and the performance hall.
Head of Humanities at Oxford University Prof. Dan Grimley expressed his “pleasure” at hiring Mr. Fulljames as a “world-class cultural leader.”
In addition to his successful opera start-up, “[Mr. Fulljames] offers essential experience in directing huge productions at world-famous locations,” the speaker claimed.
These encounters will enable us to create creative cultural programming that introduces Oxford’s humanities research to new Oxford and international audiences.
