With the second installment of James Cameron’s Avatar trilogy set to premiere in December, it’s time to reflect on what a magnificent achievement his 2009 masterpiece was.
The film was probably ahead of its time, and despite mixed reviews, Avatar remains one of the most-watched and most-debated films of all time, generating visual grandeur that most people cannot comprehend.
Cameroon has long been known for its innovative and challenging directors. To create the ultimate blockbuster, he could go to any length, from building massive bespoke tanks for his overlooked masterpiece Abyss to threatening to fire A-list actors for taking toilet breaks.

1) Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings, particularly Gollum, was one of the primary motivators for Cameron’s involvement in the project
The Lord of the Rings trilogy by Peter Jackson was one of the most well-known film series of all time. Cameron decided to go ahead with his dream project after seeing the technical team’s technological expertise, particularly the computer image of Gollum.
In an interview with EW, Cameron stated:
“Think about what Peter Jackson did with Gollum and then with King Kong. And Davy Jones [from Pirates of the Caribbean] – all of these photorealistic, completely CG characters in a photorealistic universe. Many people are probably unaware that many of King Kong’s forest shots were CG. They began by using miniatures, but by the end, they were recreating many of the jungles in computer graphics.”
2) Avatar’s cuisine was entirely vegan
Aside from the debate over whether the film and, more specifically, the filmmaker were successful in conveying the message, Avatar was based on the exploitation of natural resources. Cameron is a firm believer in the vegan diet, which he imposed on the film’s set by providing only plant-based food to the actors.
3) Cameroon taped every phone that went off during filming to the wall
Cameron is well-known for his explosive stage temper. According to insiders, Cameron fastened cell phones to the wall whenever they went off during the shoot. It seemed like a crazy rumor until Sam Worthington, the film’s actor, confirmed it in an interview.
4) For Avatar, Paul Frommer created an entirely new language
Linguist Paul Frommer was tasked with creating a new language for the film’s vibrant setting. Frommer is said to have started designing the language from scratch in order to create something that would connect with viewers while also capturing the spirit of the Na’vi.
5) The design of the Na’vi was allegedly inspired by a dream Cameron’s mother had
The Na’vi have a stunning appearance unlike anything else seen. James Cameron’s mother’s dream is said to have inspired the style. Dreams and film have long been linked due to the mystical nature of the visual medium. Cameron confirmed this in an interview, saying his mother saw a “twelve-foot-tall blue lady” in her dream. Cameron was influenced by this when designing the Na’vi. On December 16, 2022, Avatar: The Way of Water will be released worldwide.
