Who exactly is Dr. David Langer?
Dr. David Langer is the Chairman of the Neurosurgery Department at Lenox Hill Hospital. As one can see from the documentary, he comes from a family of doctors and has an innate love for treating his patients. His annoyance at ‘juggling’ administration work and patient treatment are always palpable. Nonetheless, he rises above his difficulties to become a key contributor in his department.
In his close-knit neurosurgical team, he is constantly on the lookout for ways to mutually develop the form of care offered. His fast thinking in the operating room saved not one, but several lives. The documentary provides an insider’s view into the personal factors that drive him. Since his father died as a result of a stroke, he has been on a quest to make amends in the lives of the patients he meets. This is apparent as he treats Mitzie, a woman from Tennessee with a tumor that most physicians declined to operate on. Despite a setback, in the beginning, he sends her home after removing the majority of the tumors. Although preserving work-life balance as a neurosurgeon is an impossible challenge, he comes across as a devoted father and husband who steals calls in between work to remain in the loop.

What happened to Dr. David Langer?
Dr. David Langer seems to be as busy as ever, active with almost everything relevant to his department. However, it appears that COVID-19 has changed things, even in neurosurgery. In a recent post, he discussed how the coronavirus pandemic is causing delays in planned surgeries. “My department has 65 surgeries on the schedule,” he said. Patients do not want to come to the hospital.” Furthermore, he claimed that many patients are at risk of having strokes as a result of such surgical delays. He also took part in an international debate on patient care and treatment in the aftermath of COVID-19.
“We have really shut down all of our elective surgery, and for some reason, even much of the emergency surgery has sort of evaporated,” he said in another interview. Dr. Langer went on to say that patients are currently opting out of receiving care in New York hospitals. In addition, his team is currently learning about COVID-19 in case they are called in to deal with the “scale load” of cases pouring into hospitals. He recently took part in a webinar with top healthcare doctors to explore the post-pandemic healthcare climate. They addressed the effect of population density on the healthcare system, as well as other factors that could have a long-term impact on healthcare systems as we know them. Check out the webinar by clicking here.
Aside from his professional life, he is also a dedicated husband and father, as shown by the documentary. He recently posted a screenshot of his daughter’s involvement in political activism on his Twitter profile, calling himself a proud father.
