Childhood

Charles Alexandre Rockwell was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on August 18, 1956. His grandfather was a Russian animator who invented the pinscreen, and his grandmother was a Parisian artist and theatre actress.

Svetlana Rockwell’s father was also a filmmaker and actress, while her mother was a painter. Rockwell grew up in Cambridge and relocated to New York City in his twenties.

Career

Rockwell was raised in a family of actors and producers, so it’s no wonder that he pursued a career in that field. In his early twenties, he traveled to “Paris” with his grandfather, where he studied the craft at “Cinematheque Francois.” In the 1980s, he began his career as a film producer by writing short tales.

His work has been recognized by the “Boston Institute” and the “New York City Association of Independent Video and Film.”As a result of this achievement, his debut feature picture, “Lenz,” was a commercial triumph and was included in the Berlin Film Festival in 1882.

In 1983, he filmed another film, “Hero,” which quickly became a hit and earned the 1984 “Special Jury” Prize at the United States Film Festival. His following picture, “The Soup,” was also a blockbuster when it was released in 1992. The film, which premiered at “The Sundance Film Festival,” was well acclaimed.

Rockwell’s next picture, “Somebody to Love,” was released in 1994, however, it was less successful than his prior efforts. In 1995, he published “Four Rooms,” which was a big hit. His next major picture was “13 Moons,” a comedy starring a strong ensemble cast that included “Karyn Parsons,” whom he eventually married.

Rockwell’s films continued to be successful, with one of them being 2010’s “Pete Smalls is Dead.” His most recent picture, “Little Feet’s,” was released in 2013, and it starred his two children. Following that, he appears to have taken a hiatus from filmmaking, as he did not release any work for seven years until 2020 when he published his film “Sweet Thing.”

The film, which starred his wife and children, was an instant success, receiving the Crystal Bear award at the 2020 Berlin International Film Festival.
