In 1975, he moved to Queens, New York, with his mother when his parents divorced. At the time, hip-hop music was still in its infancy, and he discovered his affinity for it.
His cousin Rene Negron and a close buddy Shah-T trained him in the skill when he purchased a pair of turntables. He traveled across the United States, changing occupations along the way. He transitioned from DJ to keyboardist during this time. Shock G came home and received a diploma when he decided to pursue a career in music. Jim Burge and Patricia J. Trice taught him music theory and piano at Hillsborough Community College.
