Early Life and Bio
In 1998, the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City inducted Victor French (born December 4, 1934) into the Great Western Performers Hall of Fame for projecting “…traditional Western ideals of honesty, integrity, and self-sufficiency in career endeavors over a lifetime in film, television, radio, or theatrical stage.”
It was almost as though it was in his blood. Victor’s father, Ted French, was a stuntman and western actor who helped him break into the industry. They appeared together in the Gunsmoke episode “Prime of Life” and in the Valley College Theater Arts department’s production of The Quick and the Dead, which Victor had attended.
Film, television, and theater were all part of his broad career. He directed 12 Angry Americans, which earned a Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award, while he was president and artistic director of the Company of Angels Theatre in Los Angeles. His many theater appearances included Henry Fonda, Jane Alexander, and Richard Dreyfuss in The Time of Your Life at the Huntington Hartford Theater.
Career
Victor had a passion for boxing since he was a child, and he would shadowbox while watching matches on television at home. Victor stepped in to aid the family-run Ten Goossens Gym in North Hollywood when his friend Al Goossen, a boxing promoter, passed away unexpectedly. “I wanted to be a part of it.” I have no idea how good of a fighter I am, but I enjoy the sport. Sailing is a popular way for some people to unwind. I live half a mile away from this gym and spend all of my spare time there. When I walk in here, all my problems vanish.” He was so taken with it that he got his license and was named co-winner of the Promoter of the Year award in 1985.
