Tanner also had the opportunity to play at the national level in his final year of high school, at the 2018 US Army All-American Bowl and the Polynesian Bowl. By the end of his senior year in high school, he had been named a four-star prospect by Rivals, 247sports, and ESPN. He subsequently took a two-year vacation from sports to serve on a religious mission in Brazil for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Tanner returned to Stanford University in 2020, where he began his NCAA football career with the Stanford Cardinal.
In his freshman season in 2020, he only played one game and completed three passes for 62 yards. The following season, he was the team’s starting quarterback, completing 15 passes for 118 yards against Kansas State. During his sophomore season, he also got the Manning Award for Star of the Week and the Davey O Brian Award twice. Tanner was selected Pac-12 Freshman of the Week in September 2021. He had three touchdown passes and 293 yards passing against UCLA, and he also guided his team to a win over Oregon by tossing a touchdown that knotted the game.
