Greg Palkon and his photographer Olaf Wiig were badly beaten nearly to death and hospitalized in February 2011 while reporting disturbances in Cairo, Egypt. Military police suspected them of being Israeli spies before they were discharged from the hospital, but the State Department, the US embassy in Cairo, and Egypt’s embassy in Washington all confirmed their identities and obtained their release.
