Stan, a writer and accountant, and Barbara Victor, a caseworker, reared Idara and one younger and one older sister in Brooklyn and Long Island. They are both from the southern Nigerian state of Akwa Ibom.
Idara was always interested in a variety of things as she grew up, and when she was eight, she began dancing and learning to play the piano. At the age of 13, she won the Miss New York Junior Teen pageant, and at the age of 15, she sang an opera aria in a state competition. While in university, Idara began performing Shakespeare readings and was a member of the African Rhythms West African ballet ensemble, as well as occasionally practicing Afro-Cuban dance. She applied for a position at “InStyle” magazine after graduating and began writing music with Mike “Double-O” – better known as a member of the Kidz In The Hall band.
