Kara Jackson- Professional Career
Kara Jackson has just gained popularity for her first book, Bloodstone Cowboy (Haymarket Books, 2019). She had been surrounded by music from her childhood, and she began singing at local venues and art galleries during her school days. She joined the Spoken Word Club around her mid-teens period, i.e., at the age of 15 years, by summing up poetry to her passions, and she also represented the school in the Louder Than a Bomb poetry festival for three years in a row. By this point, she’d written some of the first songs for her debut EP, ‘A Song for Every Chamber of the Heart.’ Following that, she composed the penultimate track, ‘Ray,’ when she was 17 years old.
Rise to Fame
Her stellar career was further bolstered when she earned the literary award at 2018 Louder Than a Bomb-finals, which was chosen by National Book Award and Pulitzer Prize nominee Patricia Smith. Later, she was a member of the University of Pennsylvania’s Adroit Magazine Mentorship Program, and she was repeatedly selected in the Louder Than a Bomb “Bomb Squad” competition, and she won the Brown University Book Award. In addition to all of this, she was a repeated awardee of the Scholastic Arts and Writing Award.
Kara was also a semi-finalist in Nimrod International Journal’s Pablo Neruda Prize in Poetry and was chosen as runner-up in the Frontier Poetry Award for New Poets by Pulitzer Prize winner Tyehimba Jess, where she competed against adults. Only her piece had been published in Poetry magazine at the time, making her one of the youngest prose writers in the esteemed journal’s 106-year existence, and this essay was republished in The Poetry Review, which readers may read here. Finally, in 2019, Kara wrote and judged a show called August Challenge #4 on Young Poets Network for young aspiring poets.
