Sulayman Chappelle is the eldest of three children born in 2006 to Dave Chappelle, an American Primetime Emmy Award-winning actor, comedian, writer, and producer, and his wife Elaine Mendoza Chappelle. He is of African-American ethnicity and American nationality, with part-Filipino descent via his mother. Sulayman has two younger siblings, Ibrahim and Sanaa, with whom he is raised on a 65-acre farm in Yellow Springs, Ohio, under the influence of Islam, to which his father converted in 1998.

David Khari Webber ‘Dave’ Chappelle was born on August 24, 1973, in Washington, D.C., as the only child of William David Chappelle III and his wife Yvonne K. Chappelle Seon, both college professors. His father worked at Antioch College, while his mother was a professor at Prince George’s Community College. Dave spent the most of his childhood in Silver Spring, Maryland, where he also attended Woodlin Elementary School. Following his parents’ divorce, he returned to Washington, D.C., with his mother, and enrolled at Duke Ellington School of the Arts, where he majored in theatrical arts and graduated in 1991.

After finishing his education, young Dave came to New York City to seek a career in the comedy business, where he rapidly attracted the attention of the audience, becoming fairly popular in the NYC comedy club circuit.
