On November 14, 1988, Justin Gaethje was born. Safford, Arizona is where he was born. Carolina, his mother, is of Mexican heritage from Sonora, Mexico, and John Ray Gaethje, his father, is German. Justin graduated from Safford High School and afterward attended the University of Northern Colorado to pursue his studies. Justin began wrestling at the age of four. After finishing the season with a 14–4 record, he was named to the Western Wrestling All-Conference First Team. Gaethje signed with the World Series of Fighting on December 2, 2012, and made his debut at WSOF 2 on March 23, 2013, defeating Gesias Cavalcante by TKO in the first round via a gash above Cavalcante’s left eye immediately after the opening. On May 4, 2017, he announced that he has vacated his WSOF championship and signed a contract with the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Gaethje won the back-and-forth fight via TKO in the second round, using a combination of punches and knees. On April 6, it was announced that Gaethje would stand-in for Tony Ferguson for the interim UFC Lightweight Championship at UFC 249 on April 18.
Rise to Fame
However, on April 9, UFC president Dana White revealed that the event had been rescheduled and that the bout would now take place on May 9, 2020. Gaethje dominated the fight, ending Ferguson’s 12-fight winning run in the fifth round via TKO. He also continued his bonus award-winning record, taking home Fight of the Night and Performance of the Night.
When questioned why he didn’t use his wrestling in his 2018 loss to Poirier, Gaethje answered, “I’ve been wrestling my whole life.” I feel I oversold the idea that this wasn’t wrestling. If I’m going to get tired, I’d rather be exhausted from fighting than wrestling. That’s why I’ve always shied away from wrestling. But I did so much cardio this camp that changing it into a wrestling match would not have been an issue for me, but I just can’t do it; On May 7, 2022, he will compete against Charles to defend his second title in the main event of UFC 274.
