Bob Woodward, an Illinois native who was born on March 26, 1943, attended Yale on a Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC) scholarship to study history and English literature. He joined the American Navy in 1965 after receiving his bachelor’s degree.
He would receive his release in 1970, decline admission to Harvard Law School, and while enrolled in graduate programs at George Washington University, apply for a position at The Washington Post. In 1971, he would formally start working as a Post reporter.
The next year, he collaborated with fellow Post reporter Carl Bernstein to cover the break-in at the DNC offices in the Watergate complex in Washington, D.C. The two discovered attempted “dirty tricks” by then-President Richard Nixon’s reelection committee with the aid of the private informant they dubbed “Deep Throat,” which resulted in Nixon’s resignation.
An increasing interest in investigative journalism was fueled by the success of Woodward and Bernstein. They would chronicle their adventures in numerous books in addition to being immortalized in television and film adaptations.

In 1974, Woodward and Bernstein wrote the Watergate-related book All the President’s Men. The novel was turned into a 1976 film starring Dustin Hoffman and Robert Redford as Woodward and Bernstein, respectively.
The Secret Man was written by Woodward when he eventually established that Deep Throat was former FBI Associate Director W. Mark Felt. His interactions with Felt during the probe were described in the book.
Twenty books, written by Woodward or with him, have been published over his nearly five-decade journalism career. The majority of his works are all-time bestsellers.
Fear: Trump in the White House, published by Woodward in 2018, sold over 1.1 million copies in its first week of availability, making it the fastest-selling debut title in Simon & Schuster’s history. As of September 2020, it ranked first in several online categories, selling 5,000 hardcopies and 8,000 ebooks per month on average.
The second book by Woodward about the Trump administration, Rage, will be released on September 15, 2020. Because of the blistering facts about President Trump’s approach to the worldwide pandemic and economic catastrophe, it is already expected to be a bestseller before it is even released.
According to estimates, the journalist receives $10.0–15.0 million in publication royalties before taxes. Despite taking a big pay reduction at the Post, Woodward reportedly enjoys a comfortable lifestyle because of his best-selling novels.
