Doja Cat (Amalaratna Zandile Dlamini) showed up at the 2021 VMAs eager to make a statement. The host mostly let her evening attire speak for itself. Doja appeared to be Heimlich from A Bug’s Life in her worm-inspired attire as she won her prize for Best Collaboration.
She changed into a different dress, one that had a knife hanging from the belt and a chair for a cap. Her final outfit, which included bird feet and a salmon Pilgrim’s hat, was possibly the most memorable.
The 2021 VMAs were dominated by Cat. Let’s examine her parents and family history.

Dumisani, Doja’s father, is a well-known actor, musician, and producer from South Africa. During his time in the US, he met Doja’s mother, with whom he eventually had two children. Dumisani asserts that he left the USA because he missed South Africa and wanted to go home.
He goes on to say that he wished to relocate with the family but that it wasn’t possible. Dumisani is well-known for his roles as Chester in the television series Yizo Yizo and Crocodile in the movie Sarafina.
Additionally, he had roles in the films Stander, Operation Delta Force, and Drum. Dumisani frequently comments on his daughter’s social media posts, giving the impression that he is quite proud of her. During an interview with TshisaLive, he discussed Doja:
“Beautiful female performing with Nicki Minaj goes by the name Doja Cat. You may find D. O. J. A. C. A. T on Google, and she is currently one of the top vocalists in America. That is my child.”
Dumisani shows Doja a lot of love and attention, but some social media users believe that this is just a last-ditch effort to get back into Doja’s life now that she is well-known.
Doja finds it a little odd that Dumisani responds to her comments, but she has no ill will against him. She believes Dumisani is where she got her talent. Doja said to XXL:
“May God keep him. He has such skill. If I have any dance ability at all, it comes from him.
Dumisani denied that he’s ever met Doja
When Doja and Whoopi Goldberg met in April 2020, their conversation about Cat’s father went viral. I was simply considering my dad because he was in Sarafina. And indeed. The most bizarre thing is seeing you and meeting you, so,” Doja said to Whoopi.
Doja informed a startled Goldberg,
“I ain’t get to meet him but you did. The cat was reassured by Whoopi that Dumisani is a truly wonderful man after she recalled the role he played.”
According to The Source, Dumisani replied that he had been attempting to contact Doja for a long time before she became well-known. He dismissed Doja’s claim that the two have never interacted, calling the claim “made up.”
The firm that manages Dumisani’s entertainment has been preventing me from looking for my baby, she claimed. He thinks that Doja’s management firm is concerned that if she meets her father, Doja will vanish. Dumisani continued, saying he had spoken to Doja:
“She managed to grab me. We spoke. We got along. Now that she is successful and at the top, she has to attract global attention, especially in South Africa where her father is.”
Doja Cat’s mom inspired her musical style
Deborah Elizabeth, Doja’s mother, raised her, and she drew inspiration for her music from the tunes she used to play. Doja claimed that Deborah enjoyed hip-hop, which surprised her because her mother was white. In The Hotbox episode 31, Doja said:
My grandmother, who is Jewish and white like me, had never heard music like that before she started interacting with other people and realized how much she liked it. Once she got me, she would play a lot of music like that—a lot of Erykah Badu, Fugees, Jamiroquai, Seal, Earth, Wind & Fire, Alice Coltrane, etc.
Deborah was a painter as well, which encouraged Doja’s imagination. Although Doja is aware that her siblings are dispersed among several different cities, she is grateful for the close-knit family she grew up in. She said to The Fader:
Although having both parents, all of your siblings, and everyone who loves each other is always wonderful, occasionally things aren’t quite like that.
Doja Cat told Dazed that her achievement can be attributed to both of her parents:
“My mother used to paint and enjoys singing in private. My father is an actress from South Africa who performed in Broadway productions of The Lion King. I borrowed a little bit from each of them in terms of everything.
