Ariana was born on January 25, 1991, in North Carolina to a white mother and an Afro-Puerto Rican father. She also disclosed to Gay Times her Italian ancestry. According to Ariana, who comes from a diverse ethnic background, she is inspired to avoid assigning people labels. She uttered:
“I present as black when I walk down the street, and I do have African-American ancestry, but I’m also partially Italian. If I had to pick a term, it would be “human” since I think people should be free to love anyone they want regardless of gender.
Ariana thought she would damage her connection with her mother
Gina DeBose, Ariana’s mother, certainly did a great job of raising her. The single mother produced a perfect child who excelled in school, won multiple dancing awards, and belonged to every school art organization. Ariana felt that if she came out as queer, she and her mother would fight, and she needed her mom’s support to continue on her upward trajectory.
However, the then-13-year-old came out to her mother and told her that she was gay. She claimed on Pop Sugar that nothing had changed as a result of the revelation:
“I was afraid that my alleged ‘confession’ would wreck everything, but then my mother shocked me. Her reaction? Okay, excellent. She gave me a lesson on the meaning of unrequited love at that precise moment. I was proud of my mother’s open-mindedness and myself for having the guts to speak up. Speaking the truth is not wrong.
