Malachi Flynn for the Toronto Raptors in the National Basketball Association. Before transferring to play for the San Diego State Aztecs, the Washington native played college basketball for Washington State. Malachi won the Mountain West Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year awards during his last collegiate campaign.
After the record-breaking season, Flynn declared for the NBA Draft, and it was widely believed that he would sign with the Utah Jazz, Milwaukee Bucks, or Toronto Raptors. He ultimately signed with the Raptors, and based on preseason performance, it appears that the franchise made the right choice.

Kristi and Eric Flynn welcomed Malachi into the world in Tacoma, Washington, on May 10, 1998. His father is African-American, while his mother is white. Flynn’s parents encouraged their kids to play sports, which helped to foster a competitive atmosphere in the home.
Being the youngest of seven children, Malachi got to go to most of his siblings’ games. According to what he said to Sports Net, it fueled his competitive side:
Attending a brother’s track meet, going to a sister’s basketball game—there was always something going on at home. All the youngsters were just becoming competitive after seeing that. Whatever you desire, you have to battle for it.
Growing up in the house was enjoyable because there was constantly something going on. Certainly plays a significant part in who I am today.
Flynn recalls playing in parks with his elder brothers despite not wanting to. He lost a lot because of the age and size gap, but he kept coming back. “But that is what it takes and it ends up paying off, playing those guys one-on-one and losing, typically,” he told The San Diego Union-Tribune.
Malachi learned how to play strategically by competing against stronger opponents
Malachi has always played against bigger opponents since he was a youngster. He concluded that the only way he could defeat them was by creating clever plays. Flynn would compete against the giants despite his little size, and he frequently won.
Malachi’s size wasn’t an issue when he was younger and played basketball, but when he entered Bellarmine Prep at the height of 5-foot-2, the basketball goal didn’t seem realistic. Thank goodness, he went through a growth spurt and became 6-foot-1.
After two years, he left Washington State because he thought he wanted a greater challenge. Bernie Salazar, Malachi’s Bellarmine Prep coach, was the one Malachi approached for advice on moving to San Diego. According to Salazar, The San Diego Union-Tribune:
I don’t know if I’m going to get better here, he said. For him, it was quite challenging. There was no sense of “I’m out of here.” He’s been devoted ever since. He is simply that way. Do what’s best for you, I told him.
Flynn made significant progress in San Diego, and a strong final season helped him earn a spot in the NBA. He is still regarded as being short among the NBA’s giants at 6-foot-1. But many predict that he will succeed because of his intelligence. Bernie Salazar succinctly described Flynn’s strategy:
“He is quite intelligent, which is one of his better qualities. His mental capacity is really strong. Malachi Flynn won’t always outperform you thanks to his athleticism. He won’t constantly pass you by or leap over you. He simply has a very high IQ.
