Gabrielle was born to Theresa Glass and Sylvester Union on October 29, 1972. She and her two siblings were raised by her parents in Omaha, Nebraska, and afterward in Pleasanton, California.
Although Theresa and Union were devout Catholics, they taught their daughters to be accepting of all people. For instance, when Gabrielle was eight years old, Theresa accompanied their daughter to a homosexual pride parade.
After 30 years of marriage, Sylvester and Theresa split peacefully. During her appearance on The View in 2014, Gabrielle discussed the marriage and divorce of her parents. She uttered:
“My parents were married for 30 years before divorcing, and I’m certain that after 30 years there was bitterness, wrath, resentment, fear, and other negative emotions. But they never brought it up as a concern for us, so I’m not sure. They didn’t include us and always put us last. I’m fortunate to be able to just emulate what my parents did and always put the children first. They’re very great, and I’m fortunate.
Gabrielle Union’s mother adopted them
To keep Gabrielle’s niece’s kids out of foster care, Gabrielle’s mother adopted them. After her divorce, Theresa moved back to Omaha to have more time to travel and spend with her friends and family.
She was about to retire and had three accomplished daughters. Her ambitions, however, were drastically altered by a tragedy in the family. She decided to take on the role of kinship caregiver for her niece’s drug-addicted children.
The two oldest of the three children that Theresa took in while they were little had drug use in their systems. She had to get used to changing diapers, hearing kids crying in the middle of the night, and choosing the proper baby formula.
Theresa accepted the task because of her experience as a social worker, where she had witnessed the disastrous results of drug addicts’ choices and the futility of foster care. She was commended by Kelly, Gabrielle’s sister, in an interview with Leo Adam Biga.
“Like me, my mother thinks the world is half full. Every situation has a bright side; we just have to look for it. However, my mother’s greatest strength is her ability to persevere in the face of adversity; no matter what, she manages to support everyone and everything, including herself. She gives me my power.
A family that is always there to support Theresa made her duty simpler. When she revealed to Leo how her family was there for her:
“I have a kind family supporting me. I have everyone waiting in line who will maintain this flow. Previously, my brother James wouldn’t admit that he was helping to raise the children, but he is now. My cousins and sister phone to confirm my break times. Recently, my granddaughter Chelsea traveled from Arizona to keep the kids while I took a break. When Tracy, my daughter, has a break from work, she stops by and lends a hand.
