Werner Herzog’s abilities and professional titles in cinema and writing cannot be described in a single word. He has achieved great success as a director, actor, novelist, and screenwriter.
Off-screen, he enjoys an equally intriguing life with his wife and children. Without a question, his films have a unique way of reaching people’s hearts, but who is the lady who managed to steal his?
Werner Herzog’s Wife: Who Is She?
Werner has been married to Lena Herzog for over two decades. The pair married in 1999 and have maintained a loving connection to this day.
His wife, like Werner, enjoys photography and writing. Lena is a self-proclaimed photographer who has published six books on the subject. The remarkable duo has collaborated on numerous projects, which has brought them closer together.
The couple’s work demonstrates that they bring out the best in each other. This extends beyond cinema and photography. Effective communication is essential for long-term relationships, and the multilingual couple has discovered the trick.
Werner is of German descent, although his wife is Serbian and speaks Russian as her first language. They overcame the language barrier, however, by compromising and agreeing to communicate in English solely.
As a result, they can ponder before speaking and analyze their emotions. A marriage that has withstood the test of time and has swerved past the stumbling blocks of hurtful remarks.
Herzog stated to The Guardian,
There hasn’t been a single curse word spoken between us in 25 years. That’s one of the many secrets to a great marriage, and we hope to hear more from the man himself in the future.
Werner and Lena also do not have any children of their own. Instead, Lena is the stepmother to three of Herzog’s former relationships’ children.
Indeed, Lena entered his life and stayed for a long time. Werner, on the other hand, has had previous marriage experiences.
Previous Marriages of Werner Herzog
Herzog has previously been married twice. Martje Grohmann, whom he married in 1967, was his first wife. Werner, when he was young and in love, made a spectacular gesture to Martje by traveling a thousand miles over the Alps to propose to her!
Rudolph Amos Achmed is the couple’s son. The marriage, however, did not survive forever, and they divorced in 1985. He met Christine Maria Ebenberger, his second wife, a few years later.
Between 1987 to 1997, they were married for a decade. Werner and Christine have a son, Simon Herzog. Furthermore, his ex-girlfriend Eva Mattes gave birth to his third kid, Hanna Mattes.
Herzog’s creative gene has been passed on to all three of his children. Rudolph, his eldest son, is a director and writer like his father.
Hanna specializes in photography, while Simon works in marketing and business consulting.
Werner’s life appears to be filled with drama, with three baby moms and a young wife. However, this is not the case with the filmmaker. On the contrary, he claims that everything is OK between him and the women in his life.
It is quite complicated. But I’ve had terrific relationships with all of the ladies I’ve dated. He also has a wonderful bond with his children. All of them, together with Lena, are members of the Werner Herzog Foundation’s Board of Trustees.
The elder filmmaker has had a significant impact on the film business, and his legacy goes on through his family’s inventiveness. He now lives happily with Lena in their California home.
