The 2022 Bruntwood Prize for Playwriting, which strives to assist writers in having their works developed for the stage, has named the play as its overall winner.

Mr. Queeley-Dennis, 27, who was born and raised in Erdington, has been in a variety of theater shows. His maiden attempt at playwriting was chosen from a shortlist of nine plays.

Bullring Techno Makeout Jamz, which is set in his hometown, follows a promising artist who must accept the possibility of giving up his aspirations due to rising debts, which force him to take a job at a contact center after graduation.

“Finally, a touching homage”

The writer claimed that as the protagonist goes on his path of self-discovery, he examines black masculinity through Beyoncé lyrics, techno parties, and the intensely personal bond a guy has with his barber.

A “vibrant, laugh-out-loud, and ultimately touching ode to being young and on the rise in Birmingham,” in the words of the judges, was how they described the piece.

The story, according to Mr. Queeley-Dennis, “is rarely portrayed, but is so prominent in defining myself and the people I grew up with who we are,” he said.

At a ceremony held at Manchester’s Royal Exchange Theatre, the award winner was revealed.
