The birth of a bison calf at a conservation initiative in the Kent countryside was praised by Leonardo DiCaprio.
In July, European bison were released into a forest close to Canterbury as part of a rewilding initiative to help the area return to its pre-human state.
The Hollywood celebrity uploaded a picture of a bison to Instagram and shared it with his 55.6 million followers. Since thousands of years ago, a bison had not given birth in the wild in the UK.
The actress, who identifies as an environmentalist, routinely comments on climate change-related topics on social media.
When bison remove underbrush, other plants and insects can develop there. Additionally, they remove the bark from conifers, promoting the growth of native species, and their shed fur acts as insulation for birds’ nests.
The West Blean and Thornden Woods, one of the greatest sections of ancient woodland in the UK with some of it over 1,000 years old, is the site of the rewilding project, which is being coordinated by the Kent Wildlife Trust and the Wildwood Trust.
When the bison took their first steps a few weeks ago, Mark Habben, director of zoo operations at Wildwood Trust, was quoted in the article as saying it was difficult to conceive “anything could come close to the elation we felt.”
But here we are, he continued,
“celebrating the birth of a bison calf.
In addition to giving millions of dollars to environmental charities, DiCaprio, a UN climate change ambassador, attended COP26 last year.
Leonardo DiCaprio is most recognized for his roles in The Great Gatsby, Titanic, The Revenant, The Wolf of Wall Street, and Django Unchained.
