Tarek El Moussa and his ex-wife/co-star Christina Haack find and renovate homes in Flip or Flop.
Viewers were captivated by El Moussa and Haack’s renovation skills as well as their on-screen chemistry.
Many people were drawn to the show because it allowed them into the lives of the two hosts.
Because of this, many viewers felt betrayed by the show when news of their split broke. As a result, many people labeled Flip or Flop as fake.
Is Flip or Flop a real thing?
Flip or Flop, like most other reality TV shows, came under scrutiny several times as viewers tried to figure out if it was real.
Renovation-themed shows like Love It or List It have been revealed to be at least partially scripted.
Many aspects of the show were fictitious. For example, in many shows, what is shown in the episode is not the house that the buyers receive.
After the production of shows like Fixer Upper ended, the furniture in the properties was removed.
Homeowners could purchase furniture and household goods on their dime. However, what is shown in the show are just props placed in the properties to film the episode.
The hosts of Flip or Flop have discussed many aspects of the show, claiming that they are not staged.
El Moussa previously revealed that the real estate auctions from which they purchase properties were genuine.
“We buy at real estate auctions,” he explained. “I must have cashier’s checks to buy cash (I lost a 20k check once that was a nightmare)!!”
Similarly, while other shows such as House Hunters and Love It or List It fake the portion where the potential buyers tour the houses, Flip or Flop did not face any doubts in this area.
El Moussa had previously stated that he and Haack had rarely gone into debt with their purchases.
He also stated that he paid for the renovations with money from investors. After the flip, he distributes half of the profit to the investors.
While the auction and renovation segments of the show are real, many viewers were disappointed when El Moussa and Hack announced their divorce in December 2016.
Even though the two were having major problems in their relationship in real life, they continued to play the loving couple in Flip or Flop.
Many people questioned how much of the reality TV show was real.
Christina Haack and Tarek El Moussa
In 2008, El Moussa and Haack first met in a real estate office. They became fast friends after their first meeting because they shared a passion for home flipping.
Taylor Reese, their first child, was born in 2010 after the couple married in 2009.
Their journey as Flip or Flop hosts began in 2013 when El Moussa made an audition tape with the help of a friend and sent it in on a whim.
But, to his surprise, he was contacted to participate in the show. When they started flipping houses on TV, they quickly became extremely successful.
In 2015, Haack gave birth to a son Brayden James, expanding their family of three.
Their marriage, however, did not last long, and they divorced in 2017. In January 2018, their marriage was annulled.
