Bennet Omalu pursued his academic and career goals as a doctor. He worked as a doctor while continuing his schooling. He served as Cyril Wecht’s intern at the Allegheny County Coroner’s Office in 1999. During this time, he became quite interested in neurology.
Later that year, he was chosen to serve as the chief medical examiner for California’s San Joaquin County. But he did step down in 2017. He charged the county sheriff with repeatedly interfering with death investigations as he left.
While employed by the coroner’s office in September 2002, Omalu inspected Mike Webster’s corpse. Mike, a former professional football player, passed away unexpectedly at age 50. The Pittsburgh Steelers player battled depression as well as cognitive and cerebral impairment for several years.

In reaction to his findings that were published in the journal, the NFL’s Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (MTBI) Committee ordered that he withdraw his conclusions. They even referred to Omalu’s study as “flawed.”
On the other hand, Omalu persisted in his efforts. Terry Long, who had committed suicide at the age of 45, was then examined by him. He found the same accumulation of tau proteins in the brain of this former football player.
Dr. Julian Bailes, the head of neurosurgery at West Virginia University School of Medicine, then gave him his support. In addition, a former Steelers team doctor consented to take part in his study. The Sports Legacy Institute was established by Omalu, Bailes, and attorney Bob Fitzsimmons to advance CTE research.
In March 2016, he finally gained some acknowledgment after years of work and study.
