While Jean Goebel was employed as a secretary at a private company, her sister worked at Houston’s KTRH, a CBS radio affiliate. Through her sister, she got to know Dan, who in 1956 served as KTRH’s news director.
Following her application for a secretarial post at the KTRH, Jean met Dan through her sister. She described him as a handsome, wise, and amiable man at the introduction. Soon after their initial encounter, they fell in love and started dating. The pair wed in 1957.

The old couple’s son Danjack and Jean’s husband Dan both provided the right answers to a trivia question about the Iran-Contra controversy and Phil Collins and Genesis. The Rathers excelled beyond all rivals and deservedly took home the $30 prize. Dan, who is worth $70 million, emphasized that the game was more about spending time with family and creating memories than it was about earning a significant quantity of money.
