Sam Smith exclaims that the group is “really overwhelmed” when their album Gloria debuted at number one. It is the third album by the 30-year-old singer to reach the top of the charts, following 2014’s The Lonely Hour and 2017’s The Thrill Of It All.
The album features duets with Ed Sheeran, Koffee, and Jessie Reyez.
The pop artist’s music video for the song I’m Not Here to Make Friends has been criticized online for being overly sexualized this week.
They are surrounded by scantily-clad dancers while dancing in a corset and nipple tassels.
Fans have defended Smith, claiming they are being attacked for being homosexual and overweight.
Smith, who identifies as non-binary and uses they/them pronouns, stated,
“Thank you to all of my incredible sailors for making Gloria this week’s most popular album.”
“I am absolutely overwhelmed and could not have accomplished this without your assistance. “Because I adore you all, this is for us.”
Sam Smith is scheduled to appear at the Grammy Awards this weekend and may collaborate with German transgender singer Kim Petras on the album’s lead tune Unholy.
Smith has previously characterized Gloria as feeling “like a coming of age” and as having gotten them “through some terrible days.”
Miley Cyrus remained at the top of the singles chart for a third consecutive week with Flowers, which was streamed over 12 million times this week.
