A few days after the incident, the actress went offline, and she hasn’t been online for three years. She eventually revealed how the criticism had affected her emotionally and resulted in an attempt on her life.
She also worked on a book called Making a Scene during this time, which she recently promoted on Twitter. The book discusses how to deal with trauma and how to receive help if you’re experiencing mental suffering.
The Crazy Rich Asians actress detailed the online abuse she received in 2019 in a lengthy post on Thursday, July 14. She started by explaining that she had been away for more than three years and was scared to use social media again because of her prior experience. Constance Wu claimed that she was attempting to re-enter the platform despite her fear. She wrote in an advertisement for her book:
Constance Wu explained how awful her position had gotten in 2019 after ma a “careless” comment about the future of her show Fresh Off the Boat. The actress said that she attempted suicide as a result of the comment’s fury. According to Constance Wu’s blog,
When I sent out careless tweets on the renewal of my TV show three years ago, it caused uproar and severe online shaming. When a fellow Asian actor told me I had damaged the Asian American community, I felt awful about what I had said and that I didn’t even deserve to live.
“I embarrassed AsAms and they would be better off without me,” I said. It seems strange looking back that a couple of DMs convinced me to join.
Fortunately, she was found and taken to the hospital by one of her friends. After the incident, Constance Wu decided to focus on her mental health by taking a break from her job and social media. She continued by stating that Asian cultures should talk about mental health more often. She went on to say:
AsAms rarely talk about mental health. Although we are willing to rejoice in representational successes, the more challenging subjects are generally avoided in our group.
She continued by stating that she was “avoided” by other Asian Americans in the industry as a result of the incident, which “hurt a lot.” Constance Wu had a greater awareness of mental health issues, though, and was made aware of “how important it is to reach out and care for people who are going through a difficult moment” as a result of the experience.
She explained the motivation behind her book’s creation. While they are going through a difficult time, she hopes that her book will enable readers to “reach out and speak about the awkward matters.” She continued, saying:
So, even if it may not be the best reflection of myself, my book is as truthful as I can make it.
Since I am neither poised, graceful, nor perfect, the truth is that I am neither. I’m overpowered by feeling. I’m quite mistake-prone! She promised that she would gradually return to the internet and social media as she ended the piece.
Constance Wu tweeted what in 2019?
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Constance Wu’s reaction was unexpected when Fresh Off the Boat was given a sixth season renewal in May 2019. On Twitter, the actress stated:
The actress also left a “dislike” comment on the show’s Instagram page. The actress had to delete the tweet and replace it with the following statement when it received strong criticism from online users:
“Today’s tweets were poorly timed with the show’s announcement because they followed a challenging day.” Please convey my gratitude for the FOTB renewal. The personnel and characters are wonderful. I feel privileged to take part in it. I appreciate your support as well as that of everyone who agrees with my informal use of the word “f**k.”
She continued to explain to her fans why she was upset, saying that the renewal of FOTB meant she would have to give up a “passion” project. However, it was insufficient, and the actress was forced to take a break from social media to quell the backlash.
