The teaser trailer for Great Expectations was released on February 7, giving fans their first look at the highly anticipated show. The clip showed Fionn Whitehead’s Pip walking into a room and being greeted by Olivia Colman’s terrifying Miss Havisham. Colman has previously played Queen Anne in The Favourite and Queen Elizabeth in The Crown, so she is no stranger to historical roles.
Miss Havisham believes
“Please allow me to see you. What a valuable species we’ve rescued from the sea.”
According to the teaser, much money was spent on the show’s makeup, costumes, and set design. Tom Hardy and Ridley Scott will serve as executive producers alongside Marina Brackenbury, the BBC’s Dean Baker, David W. Zucker, Kate Crowe, and Mona Qureshi. The project will be co-produced by FX Productions, the BBC, Scott Free, and Hardy Son & Baker.
This is not, however, the first time Great Expectations has been adapted for the big screen. In 2011, the book was adapted into a three-part BBC series, and in 2012, it was adapted into a feature film of the same name. In the 2011 remake, Gillian Anderson played Miss Havisham, Douglas Booth played Pip, and Ray Winstone played Magwitch.
Ralph Fiennes played Magwitch, Jeremy Irvine played Pip, and Helena Bonham Carter played Miss Havisham. The show’s creator, Steven Knight, previously created Peaky Blinders, which starred Cillian Murphy, Sam Neill, Helen McCrory, and Paul Anderson, among others.
What is the storyline of the novel Great Expectations?
Great Expectations is Charles Dickens’ twelfth and final completed novel, first published in 1861. Pip, an orphan who works as an apprentice for a blacksmith in a rural community, is central to the plot.
His mind is racing with hopes and expectations, and his good fortune unexpectedly transports him to London, where he joins high society but quickly becomes entangled in a dark world of possibilities after meeting Miss Havisham.
The novel’s summary, according to Goodreads, is as follows:
“Great Expectations follows Pip from childhood to adulthood as he moves from the Kent marshes to busy, commercial London, meeting a variety of extraordinary characters ranging from Magwitch, the escaped convict, to Miss Havisham, who is imprisoned by her unhappy past and living with her ward, the arrogant, beautiful Estella.”
