Louis Vuitton has appointed Pharrell Williams, a Grammy-winning producer, rapper, performer, and songwriter, as its new menswear creative director.

The label referred to Williams as “a visionary whose creative realms span music, art, and fashion.”

He co-founded the streetwear company Billionaire Boys Club.

Virgil Abloh, a prominent fashion designer who died in 2021, formerly held the Louis Vuitton position.

In June, Williams’ debut collection with the label will debut during Men’s Fashion Week in Paris.

“After previous collaborations in 2004 and 2008 for Louis Vuitton, I am pleased to welcome Pharrell back home as our new Men’s Creative Director,” Louis Vuitton chairman and CEO Pietro Beccari said in a statement.

Mr. Beccari continued,

“His creative vision beyond fashion will surely lead Louis Vuitton into a new and extremely exciting era.”

Louis Vuitton is one of the foremost worldwide fashion houses in the world. It is a subsidiary of LVMH, which is controlled by the world’s wealthiest person, Bernard Arnault.

Williams was a judge on the renowned television talent program The Voice and has earned thirteen Grammy Awards.

He was nominated for an Oscar for the song Happy, which was featured on the soundtrack of the animated film Despicable Me 2.

Williams and Japanese designer Nigo co-founded the streetwear label Billionaire Boys Club in 2003.

He has worked with sportswear giant Adidas, luxury companies Moncler and Chanel, and Louis Vuitton designer Marc Jacobs on eyewear.

Williams was criticized for wearing diamond-studded Tiffany spectacles at a fashion event one year ago.

Social media users drew comparisons between the design and a pair of spectacles from the Mughal era in India.

Virgil Abloh, Williams’ predecessor at Louis Vuitton, founded the Off-White fashion line.

In November 2021, at the age of 41, he succumbed to cancer. He was known for mixing streetwear themes with high fashion.

His posthumous final menswear presentation included an elaborate “Dreamhouse” theme with angels, breakdancing models, and gender-neutral designs.
