Some individuals assume that the third attempt will be the charm. This is not the case with Kelly McGillis, though. The actress from Top Gun has been married three times, with her third union to Melanie Leis being the shortest.
Over their time together, McGillis and Leis experienced countless ups and downs, leading many to believe that their relationship would stand the test of time. As expected, they were still racing strong.
During an interview with INTIX, Leis referred to her ex-husband as the love of her life. Leis continued, “I never believed I would say it so simply a few years ago, but now I say it with entire candor.” In 2011, after one year of marriage, the couple separated.

McGillis and Leis met in 2000 at Kelly’s, the actress and her then-husband Fred Tillman’s pub. Leis stated at the meeting,
“I began working at the restaurant when Kell was out of town filming a movie.” I looked up one day and she was there. I didn’t even see her from across the room.”
She continued by stating that she had no notion McGillis was an actress, and that once they began conversing, she was impressed by her wicked sense of humor.
One evening, the two females went out to celebrate a friend’s birthday. McGillis developed feelings for Leis as they grew closer. They began dating shortly thereafter, but it was not a healthy relationship.
Together, they drank and used drugs. In 1982, alcohol and drugs gave McGillis relief from the trauma of being raped as a Juilliard student. She believed she was being punished due to her sexual orientation.
For the sake of McGillis’ two children, the couple ultimately recognized they could not continue living in this manner and awoke.
They moved to Mohnton, Pennsylvania, but life was not as straightforward as they had anticipated. McGillis continued to work, but her relationship with Leis affected the lives of her children.

The children of McGillis embraced her partner, but their friends and the parents of their friends were less enthusiastic. In a February 2009 interview with SheWired.com, she came out as homosexual and highlighted her desire to be truthful about her identity.
By this moment, though, she and Leis were no longer together. Prior to their divorce, they had determined that their partnership “was no longer functional.”
Humans evolved and altered at varying rates and during varied time periods. McGillis confessed, “I always wanted to be with Mell with all my heart and soul, but I wasn’t willing to stick around until she was willing to work on herself.”
Leis described the breakup as the “worst time of her life” and stated that she had obstacles to overcome. After recognizing she’d made a mistake with McGillis, Leis requested a second opportunity. And McGillis, who could not get over Leis, conceded, resulting in their marriage.
The pair vowed to cherish one another, but in 2011 it became public that they had separated. Nobody knows why, and there have been no reports of a reconciliation between the two.
