How did Martha Stewart start her Professional Career?

After renovating the 19th-century farmhouse she had bought, Stewart decided to concentrate her efforts on gourmet cuisine. She had prepared herself by reading Julia Child’s Mastering the Art of French Cooking.

She launched a catering company in the late 1970s and soon rose to fame for her upscale cuisine and distinctive, artistic presentation. Within a decade, Martha Stewart, Inc. had expanded into a $1 million company that catered to corporate and celebrity clients.

Entertaining, Stewart’s debut book, became a best-seller and launched her career in publishing. Soon after, she published more books including Martha Stewart’s Quick Cook Menus, Martha Stewart’s Hors d’Oeuvres, Martha Stewart’s Christmas, and Martha Stewart’s Wedding Planner.

Her personal life was affected by her new-found fame because her marriage to Andy terminated in divorce in 1990 after a three-year separation.

When Martha Stewart Living was first published in 1991, Martha Stewart, Inc. changed its name to Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, Inc.

Stewart’s lifestyle empire swiftly grew to include two magazines, a recipe book large enough to be found in grocery stores, a well-liked cable television program, a syndicated newspaper column, several how-to books, a radio show, an Internet site, and $763 million in yearly retail sales.

The most well-known housewife in America went back to Wall Street on October 19, 1999, to oversee her company’s IPO on the New York Stock Exchange.

Each of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, Inc.’s 72 million shares had surged in value by more than 95% by the end of the day, raising close to $130 million. Stewart is worth $1.2 billion and owns 96% of the voting shares in her company.

In June 2002, Stewart once more made financial news, this time for allegations of insider trading. Stewart was under investigation for selling a large number of ImClone Systems shares right before the FDA rejected the company’s novel cancer treatment.

As the FDA made its announcement, the stock’s value fell precipitously. Four months after joining the board of directors of the New York Stock Exchange, Stewart resigned owing to the probe in October.

In a 41-page indictment released in June 2003, Stewart was accused of securities fraud, obstruction of justice, conspiracy, and providing false statements to law enforcement.

She resigned as chair and CEO of her Omnimedia company after entering a not-guilty plea to all allegations. In February 2004, a judge threw out the securities fraud allegation, but a jury convicted her guilty of obstruction of justice, conspiracy, and two counts of making false statements.

Stewart was given a five-month prison term and a $30,000 fine in July that year. She started serving her sentence in a minimum-security facility in Alderson, West Virginia, in October 2004.

The day after NBC announced she will host two new shows, a daytime chat and how-to show and a spinoff of Mark Burnett and Donald Trump’s reality series The Apprentice, Stewart was released from prison on March 4, 2005. To finish her sentence, Stewart was placed under house arrest for five months at her Bedford, New York, residence.

Stewart’s version of The Apprentice was a failure, but her syndicated daytime program with the same name has been airing since 2005.

The business she started, Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, has grown in new ways. The additions included several non-Stewart periodicals, such as Everyday Food and Body + Soul. Stewart continues to be a mainstay on television, working as a judge on programs like Bake away Camp and Chopped.

Stewart’s syndicated show was moved to the Hallmark Channel in 2010, however, it was unable to maintain the pricey to produce show due to a lack of viewership. In 2012, Hallmark terminated the program due to poor ratings. That September, Stewart debuted a brand-new Martha Stewart’s Cooking School PBS series.

In 2013, Stewart was again in a courtroom. Her business was embroiled in a legal battle over a contract with the Macy’s department store empire. Macy’s filed a lawsuit against Stewart and J.C. Penney because Stewart intended to set up Martha Stewart brand boutiques inside of Penney’s stores. In the end, the issue was resolved.
