Moir, a native of Darlington, is exhibiting a collection of sketches and paintings at the Biscuit Factory in Newcastle.

The exhibition, named Hot Buttered Mattress, comprises a variety of ornithological pieces as well as Moir’s Bird Colour Wheel.

“Birds are my passion,” he remarked.

I believe that if you paint something you know and love, the results will be superior.

Moir has collaborated with Bob Mortimer as Vic Reeves on productions such as Shooting Stars and Vic Reeves’ Big Night Out.

In addition to publishing art books, the artist has staged shows at the Saatchi Gallery and the Whitechapel Gallery in London.

Painting Birds with Jim and Nancy Moir, his new Sky Arts program, is scheduled to debut later this year.

Moir stated that the exhibition’s title was “the first thing that sprang to mind.”

He laughed and replied,

“Don’t ask me what that means since I don’t know.”

He has always enjoyed observing and sketching birds, but he is now able to paint them more frequently.

“When I was a child, and I grew up not too far from here in Darlington, I would observe and draw birds when I wasn’t at school,” he explained.

“Now that I’m 64, I’m painting birds with renewed vigor.

“I awaken at about 06:00 and enter my studio, brimming with energy.

“I go to bed thrilled about what I’m going to paint the following day, and I wake up excited and get to work.”

Laughing again, he noted that calculating the triangle and circle dimensions for the quadrants of his color wheels was “the only time I’ve ever utilized mathematics.”

Moir stated that he attempted to give the exhibition a “Northeast flavor” and that he hoped to paint more on Holy Island, “but the weather was terrible.”

He stated that he “just sort of splattered a lot of ink” over the Lindisfarne Curlew.

Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t when doing paintings like this, and this one worked.

Mountain of Turkish Delight, Moir’s previous exhibit at the Biscuit Factory, was completely sold out.

Rachel Brown, the gallery’s general manager, stated that the gallery was “delighted” to have him return.

She stated,

“It is an honor to be the only venue in the North East to display Jim’s art. It has been a pleasure to observe the evolution of his practice throughout the years we’ve worked with him “
