Rob Lowe’s sex tape was released in 1998, while his second son, John Owen Lowe, was approximately three years old.
It is unclear whether Rob Lowe had a sex discussion with his son, John Owen Lowe, but the sex tape chat is a certainty.
During a March 14 interview with Men’s Health, the 28-year-old actor stated that he discovered his father’s infamous 1998 sex tape via a high school classmate.
“I was in eighth grade or my freshman year of high school when someone told me that my father had a sex film on the Internet,” he recounted. “I was like, ‘What?'”
“Do you have any idea what it’s like? Santa Claus continued John Owen. “I don’t believe most parents ever sit their children down and say, ‘Alright, we’ve got to tell you something.’ A youngster just figures things out. There were no defining moments, such as “Now that he’s 16, it’s time for them to learn about this phase of our lives!”
The 58-year-old celebrity’s sex tape was only the beginning of John Owen’s father-related problems. He continued by stating that he didn’t want to be anywhere near his father after realizing that others were using him to get close to the St. Elmo’s Fire alum.
“The frequency with which I was compared to my father and the frequency with which he was brought up in conversation made me so uncomfortable that I wanted to get as far away from that as possible,” he admitted.
John Owen Lowe eventually came around and is now as close to his famous father as he can be: their new comedy, Unstable, is ready to be released on Netflix.
Together, they wrote a screenplay based on their shared life experiences. Son, portrayed by John Owen, is compelled to work in his father’s (portrayed by Rob) business.
Rob and John Owen previously collaborated on the 2020 Fox series 9-1-1: Lone Star, which stars the former.
According to IMDb, John Owen has contributed as a writer to more than 30 episodes of the emergency room drama series, while his uncle, Chad Lowe, has performed in and directed a few episodes.
During a 2021 interview with Entertainment Today, Rob remarked about working with his family,
“I’m very delighted and proud, and it makes coming to work even more fun than usual.”
“We can have an entire conversation about a scene or sequence, and I’ll forget that it’s my son and my brother, and I’ll think, wow, those guys really knew what they were doing!”
John Owen stated that working alongside his family and genuinely enjoying it meant a great deal to him. Amazingly, we work in the same field, so not only do I look up to him emotionally, but also professionally. Very sweet!
