Jenny Lee was the only child of actor James Arness and Chapman, his future ex-wife. On May 23, 1950, she was born at Good Samaritan Hospital. Lee grew up in a happy family where both of her parents worked as actors.
Lee also had two brothers, Craig Arness, an older brother, and Rolf Arness, a younger brother. Her younger brother, Rolf, was born on February 18, 1952.
