Andor is set to premiere on September 21, 2022, and will reintroduce the legendary role of Rebel commander Mon Mothma, as well as Genevieve O’Reilly, the actress who played the character on and off for nearly 20 years.
O’Reilly first appeared as the character in a deleted scene from Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith in 2003. She spent the majority of her time in Star Wars Rebels doing voice dubs for the characters. With Andor, the actress felt she had her first true chance to explore the character in depth.
She stated, ”
“Being able to investigate and dive into her — not only as a Rebel commander, but also as a woman — has been something I didn’t expect and something I’m grateful to be a part of.”
She went on to say:
“I always thought Caroline [Blakiston’s Mon Mothma] held visible anguish in the heart and core of that moment. So I’ve always been curious about what caused that suffering,…and having the opportunity to find out would hopefully inform and enhance the work that already exists.”
Genevieve O’Reilly, who is she?
Genevieve O’Reilly was born in Dublin, Ireland on January 6, 1977. She grew up in Adelaide, Australia, as the oldest of four siblings. When she was 20 years old, the actress moved to Sydney. In 2000, she graduated from the National Institute of Dramatic Art. In 2001, Genevieve O’Reilly made her television debut in the Canadian series BeastMaster. She later appeared in Asylum Seekers. She rose to prominence as Leanne Curtis in All Saints. The program lasted from 2002 to 2005.
She has appeared on a variety of shows, including The State Within, The Time of Your Life, Diana: Last Days of a Princess, Second Chance, Life, Spooks, Waking the Dead, The Day of the Triffids, Law & Order: UK, and Midsomer Murders. Genevieve O’Reilly rose to prominence in the miniseries The Honourable Woman as Frances Pirsig. She was also in the BBC TV series Banished.
She also appeared in The Matrix Reloaded, The Matrix Revolutions, Avatar, Right Here Right Now, The Young Victoria, Forget Me Not, Survivor, The Legend of Tarzan, and The Snowman during this time period. Genevieve also played Moira in Overwatch in 2017.
She is best known for her portrayal of Mon Mothma, a role she played for many years. She said of her role in Andor and the opportunity to delve into the character:
“This is a fantastic part. It’s been an honor to step into Caroline Blakiston’s shoes, which she co-created with George Lucas in the 1980s, and to revisit her at various points in my life. So having the chance to explore and delve into her — not just as a Rebel leader, but also as a woman — has been unexpected and exciting.”
