After a brief football career, Suarez retired. Between 1980 and 1995, he was a defender for Deportivo Pereira and Atletico Nacional before deciding to pursue a coaching career.
He served as an assistant to Francisco Maturana, whom he regarded as an inspiration and a father figure, for many years. In 1999, he became manager of his former team, Atletico Nacional, with whom he had won the Colombian championship 1999.
Later, he coached Deportivo Cali, Deportes Tolima, and Aucas before becoming manager of Ecuador in 2004 and leading the team to a second World Cup victory in 2006.
On the third day of qualifying, after losing all three games against Venezuela, Brazil, and Paraguay, Saurez resigned. Before becoming the manager of Honduras in 2011, he oversaw Aucas, Atletico Nacional, and Juan Aurich.
Honduras qualified for the World Cup under his leadership, finishing third in CONCACAF qualifying in Brazil. He quit following the final game and went on to manage Universitario, Dorados de Sinaloa, La Equidad, Junior, and Atletico Bucaramanga. He left Atlético Bucaramanga to become the Costa Rica head coach in 2021.
Luis is fixated on winning his third World Cup
Suarez has recently used the term obsession to describe his third World Cup, which he views as a healthy fixation.
A plaque on his refrigerator door lists the opponent Costa Rica would face in the FIFA World Cup if they qualified. Spain, Germany, Japan, and Costa Rica are involved nations.
He affixed it on his refrigerator door because it is always on his mind. Luis frequently visits the refrigerator since he consumes so much water. He describes the note in order to visualize it.
According to him, he didn’t know what it was while he was in the first division, but after he discovered it and performed well, he desperately wanted to return.
When he was offered the position in Costa Rica, he persuaded himself that he had to accept it or perish. Currently, he is halfway between death and obsession, hoping that his fixation would prevail.
This will be his third appearance at the World Cup, having represented Ecuador in 2006 in Germany and Honduras in 2014 in Brazil. Costa Rica’s qualification for the World Cup was the result of his tenacity and dedication.
By defeating New Zealand 1-0 in an intercontinental play-off in Qatar, Costa Rica completed the 32-team FIFA World Cup field. Suarez completed his hat trick at the World Cup. Saurez stated after the victory:
This team represents what it means to be Costa Rican. They never surrender and consistently offer their all. “This has always been my main concern. ” Being in this circumstance is delightful.”
