Despite multiple NCAA offers, Morneau chose not to enroll in college. In the third round of the 1999 MLB amateur entry selection, the Twins took him with the 89th overall pick. He then participated in several minor divisions.
On June 10, 2003, Morneau made his big league debut with the Minnesota Twins, hitting cleanup against the Colorado Rockies. He had a standout minor league season the following year, playing in 74 games for the Twins. In 280 at-bats, he knocked 19 home runs, 58 runs batted in, and committed just three errors.
For the first three years of his Twins career, Morneau donned jersey number 27. Starting in 2006, he played the rest of his Twins tenure in number 33.
