Lee was born and raised in Ulsan and did not leave the country until the age of 19. The first time he left Uslan was after enrolling at Korean University in Seoul. When he first arrived in Seoul, he had only one thought:
“When will I be able to return home?”
In 2014, Lee made his debut with Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors in an AFC Champions League game. Former Jeonbuk manager Choi Kang-hee praised his football ability.
In 2016, he enjoyed his best season with the club, with 16 assists and an AFC Champions League title. In July 2018, he signed a three-year contract with 2. Bundesliga club Holstein Kiel.
With two assists in his debut game, he earned the Player of the Match award for his impressive performance.
He scored the fourth penalty kick in a 2020-21 DFB Pokal encounter, and the squad advanced to the DFB Pokal semi-finals for the first time in history, only to be eliminated by Borussia Dortmund.
In July 2021, Lee signed a three-year contract with Mainz 05. Lee will represent South Korea at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
This is his second occurrence. As a member of South Korea’s squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, he participated in all three group-stage matches.
How does he replenish his energy?
Lee recharges his batteries by spending quality time with his parents, particularly with the family of his older brother in Jeonju. The majority of his time is devoted to his niece and nephew.
He expresses gratitude to his family, who are also his earliest supporters, for their continuing affection and fervent support.
According to him, his father frequently points out things he overlooks and gives him sound advice, to which he always adheres. The presence and wisdom of his father are crucial sources of nourishment for him.
He has experienced racist abuse
Lee, like numerous other football players, has been subject to racial abuse. After Wolverhampton Wanderers filed a complaint with UEFA on the racist abuse Hwang-Hee chan received during a friendly match in Portugal, Hwang-Hee chan published an article on his Naver blog addressing racial harassment and detailing his own experience.
Since it is a growing worry among Korean athletes, he felt forced to address it, and he shared his personal experience. While playing for the German team Holstein Kiel, he received his first taste of the sport.
According to him, one of his teammates entered a room and asked him what he had been eating, which left him so sensitive to the odor of garlic that he avoided people, stopped eating Korean food, and even wore perfume before heading to training to avoid criticism.
During training, he was teased for his eyes and frequently advised to open them. Outside of football, he also faced discrimination. When traveling through Germany, a group of intoxicated persons made unpleasant comments and insults.
Noting that racism is not limited to Korean players in Europe, he admitted to watching the attitude of Korean players and spectators against foreign players in the K league while he was playing in Korea and to being responsible for how they treated them.
