When he started working as an intern for a local newspaper in 1979, he made his debut in the field of journalism. He started working as a reporter for the Washington Post in 1980.
The National Football League, Major League Baseball, the National Basketball Association, and college sports were all topics for his first piece.
Ten years later, he was promoted to full-time writer and began writing a regular sports column. He has covered every Super Bowl since 1987 for The Washington Post throughout his career, in addition to 10 Summer and Winter Olympic Games. Almost every Final Four since 1982 and every NBA Finals since 1987 have also been covered by him.
In 1982, he was the lone reporter from outside of Hawaii to cover an important game between Chaminade and Virginia. He won the 2001 Society of Professional Journalists award for outstanding sports columnist.
