American Idol has advanced to the Hollywood Week round after five grueling tryout stages, where the chosen candidates will perform solo and in pairs under various obstacles. The show will premiere on ABC on April 2 at 8 p.m. ET.
Dawson Wayne is a singer-songwriter who advanced to the Hollywood Week round after passing the American Idol off-camera tryout. He auditioned for Zoom’s famous music challenge last August. Wayne traveled to Nashville to perform in front of Luke Bryan, Katy Perry, and Lionel Richie, among others. Dawson is one of 150 contestants who received a “yes” from all three judges and will now compete for a place among the top 24 vocalists.

His real name is Dawson Rice, is a Reagan High School alumnus from Katy, Texas. His school’s military band’s pit commander and percussion major were him. Dawson used to perform on stage as Hello Dolly and Titanic in the Foundations and Chamber Choir. At the Joci Awards, he received a $4000 bursary for his work on Titanic. Wayne is currently enrolled at Brigham Young University in Hawaii and plans to move to Utah.
He also wants to attend BYU in Provo, and his solo album, With All My Heart (written by someone else), was released last October as part of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ annual student album. The American Idol contestant revealed during a discussion about his record:
“It was the coolest thing I’ve ever done; I’ve always loved music and wanted to make a career out of it, so getting to go to this massive recording studio with this talented producer (Mitch Davis) was life-changing.”
Dawson’s life goal is to “look at the audience and give them a good show,” which they detect and find amusing. On the night of his Hollywood Week show, Dawson released his first original single, More Me, Lonely. The music Wayne performed during his audition is unknown, but it pleased the judges. Katy Perry called him “a budding artist,” and Judge Richie added:
“I like where your singing is coming from — deep within, from a spiritual place.”
Wayne’s mother, Jana Rice, revealed that while Dawson appeared calm on the surface, it was his ambition to compete on American Idol. Jana was not in Hollywood at the time of Wayne’s show, so she will see him for the first time with others on television.
