Coolio, a Grammy-winning American rapper, died in September 2022 due to the effects of fentanyl and other narcotics, according to his manager.
Jarez Posey stated that the musician’s family had been informed of the findings by the coroner for Los Angeles County.
Six months ago, the artist was discovered unresponsive on the lavatory floor of a friend’s Los Angeles home. He was 59.
Gangsta’s Paradise by Coolio, whose real name was Artis Leon Ivey Jr, earned a Grammy in 1995.
The song, which was subsequently selected as the soundtrack for the film Dangerous Minds, went on to become one of the most successful rap songs of all time, helping to mainstream the genre.
It continues to be popular and has surpassed a billion YouTube views.
According to BBC’s US partner CBS News, the rapper was ailing from heart disease and asthma at the time of his death.
While Coolio had recently used phencyclidine or PCP, CBS reported that his mortality was caused by a combination of fentanyl, heroin, and methamphetamines.
The coroner’s office determined that his demise was an accident.
Coolio began making music in the 1980s, but his position in hip-hop history was cemented when he released Gangsta’s Paradise.
He was born in Pennsylvania but raised in the Los Angeles suburb of Compton, where his career flourished and he rose to prominence in the 1990s West Coast rap music scene.
According to The Black Names Project website, his rap moniker originated from a conversation with an acquaintance who asked him,
“Who do you think you are, Coolio Iglesias?”
Before devoting himself exclusively to hip-hop, he served as a volunteer firefighter in the San Jose area.
He appeared in dozens of films and television programs, including Celebrity Big Brother in the United Kingdom in 2009.
He even found a way to express his passion for cuisine through a book and web series entitled Cooking with Coolio.
During his four-decade-long career, he released eight studio albums and won an American Music Award and three MTV Video Music Awards.
Fantastic Voyage, Rollin’ With My Homies, 1, 2, 3, 4 (Something New), and Too Hot were among his additional songs.
