Barry Humphries, best known for his comedic role as Dame Edna Everage, is being treated in the hospital, according to his family.
According to the Sydney Morning Herald, the 89-year-old comedian underwent hip surgery last month following a February accident and was readmitted due to complications.
According to his family, he was “in the hospital receiving treatment for health problems.”
They reported that he thanked “everyone for the support and well wishes he has received, but wished for even more.”
They added in a statement to the newspaper,
“He would also like to thank the wonderful doctors, nurses, and staff at St. Vincent’s Hospital.”
His wife, Lizzie Spender, was quoted as saying he was “fine” in the article.
Andrew Neil tweeted on Saturday that he had visited “legendary” Humphries, who had been receiving treatment for “months,” according to Neil.
Neil wrote, “As always, he had me in stitches, despite the fact that he has been undergoing various hospital treatments for months.” “I am awed by his bravery. And, of course, his irrepressible sense of humor, even in adversity.”
‘Hello, possums!’
In the late 1980s, the Dame Edna Everage Experience, a chat program based on Humphries’ most famous creation, became a hit in the United Kingdom.
She was known for her lilac-hued hair and flamboyant spectacles, and she frequently greeted audiences with the catchphrase,
“Hello possums!”
His other well-known personas on stage and screen include the lustful, inebriated Australian cultural attaché Sir Les Patterson and the grandfatherly Sandy Stone.
In 2016, he said of Stone,
“I can finally feel myself becoming him.”
In 2012, the actor, author, director, and screenwriter who also enjoys landscape painting announced a farewell tour for his satirical one-man stage show.
