Gary Barnett worked as a graduate assistant coach for Al Onofrio at the University of Missouri from 1969 to 1971. He served as a coach at Air Academy High School in Colorado Springs after graduating, where he had won conference titles and reached the quarterfinals in 1980 and 1981. He was a head coach for nine of his eleven years of coaching.

The following year, Gary relocated to Colorado to become Bill McCartney’s assistant coach, but two years later, he returned to take over as the head coach at Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado. He led his team’s offense in the 1991 Orange Bowl, where they earned their first and only national championship.

After years of losses, Gary took over as Northwestern’s head coach in 1991 and guided the club to its best season. In 1949, he led them to their first Rose Bowl appearance and their first Big Ten Conference championship since 1936.

The following year, they won a trip to the Florida Citrus Bowl. This led to his induction into the Northwestern University Athletic Hall of Fame. Before moving to Colorado, he played at Northwestern for eight seasons.

Gary was hired as Colorado’s 22nd coach. He led them to four Big 12 North titles and a conference title in 2001. Additionally, he led the team to second place in the nation. He declined multiple offers after his performance at Northwestern, including ones from Georgia, UCLA, and Notre Dame.

However, in addition to making inflammatory comments off the field and performing poorly on the field, a recruiting scandal hurt his reputation. According to a recruiting scandal, candidates were tempted with sex and alcohol during recruiting visits.

All of these combined causes led to his suspension occurring in the offseason of 2004. He was later permitted to resume coaching Colorado, where he was honored as the Big 12 Coach of the Year. Later, on December 9, 2005, he was forced to resign with a $3 million buyout.
