Jim and Aurora discover hull breaches on their ship two years after an asteroid collision. The computer module in charge of the ship’s fusion reactor power plant has been severely damaged, resulting in a series of malfunctions. The module is replaced, but the computer’s attempt to vent the reactor fails.
Jim must spacewalk and manually vent the plasma from the outside. Jim must remain in the tube while Aurora initiates venting from within the ship in order to keep the vent open. Aurora confesses her deep fear of losing Jim and being alone in a heartfelt confession. Jim survives the venting but is ejected into space when his tether snaps and his spacesuit starts to lose oxygen.
Aurora finds Jim’s body and revives him in the Autodoc. The reactor has been repaired, and the Avalon has resumed normal operations. Jim discovers the Autodoc can function as a hibernation pod for one person after burying Gus in space. Aurora could go back to sleep for the rest of the journey, but she chooses to stay awake with Jim.
The crew awakens on time, eighty-eight years later, to find a lush and vibrant Homestead II. They discover a large tree with trailing vines, a small cabin, and flying birds in the ship’s grand concourse. Aurora’s story, as told on tape, describes the life she and Jim led on the Avalon. Jim had given Aurora a fake engagement ring, which she had accepted.

Plot of Passengers
The Avalon is a sleeper ship that transports 5,000 colonists and 258 crew members in hibernation pods from Earth to Homestead II over a 120-year journey. However, an asteroid collision damages the ship after only 30 years, causing a malfunction that awakens passenger Jim Preston, a mechanical engineer, 90 years too soon.
Jim becomes despondent as he is isolated and alone until he notices Aurora Lane, a young woman in a pod. He awakens her for companionship despite knowing it is wrong, and they fall in love over the next year. Aurora, on the other hand, is devastated when she discovers the truth about her awakening and rejects Jim.
Gus Mancuso, another awakened crew member, assists Jim and Aurora in determining the source of the ship’s malfunctions and provides them with his employee code to gain access to crew-only areas. The ship is repaired and the reactor is vented, but Jim is forced to spacewalk and nearly dies. Aurora resuscitates him and chooses to stay awake with him rather than go back to sleep. The ship’s crew awakens 88 years later to find a lush planet and a cabin left by Jim and Aurora, who lived a full life together on the Avalon.
