Lionel Richie walked his daughter, Sofia Richie, down the aisle to her partner Elliot Grainge in late April 2023.
“My little girl is all grown up and starting her own journey with the love of her life,” Lionel said on Instagram. “You’ll always be my little bird, but I’m so proud of the woman you’ve become.”
Sofia Richie is the daughter of a Black father and a Caucasian mother
Sofia Richie was born to Lionel Richie and Diane Alexander on August 24, 1998. She is of mixed race, with Black and Caucasian ancestors. Sofia does not appear black and could easily pass for white. In December 2016, she told Complex that people frequently mistake her for white. Some even make racist remarks in her presence, oblivious to her heritage.
“I’m very light, so some people don’t realize I’m black,” Sofia explained to Complex. “I’ve been in situations where people will say something racist, and I’ll step in, and they’ll say, ‘Oh, well, you’re light.'”
Sofia, then 18, told the outlet that she chastises the unwitting racists. “That’s still not good enough, buddy,” she says. “It’s 2016, you better get your shit together before you’re slapped out here.”
