Laura Coates was born on July 11, 1980, in Saint Paul, Minnesota. She earned a B.A. in 2001 from Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs. She wrote a senior thesis in college called “The Legacy of Southern Redemption: An Examination of Felon Disenfranchisement Policy.”

Coates then attended the University of Minnesota Law School, where he earned his J.D. in 2005. Laura began her legal career as an associate attorney at Faegre & Benson, a private firm in Minnesota. She left the firm to work as an associate at Kasowitz, Benson, Torres & Friedman, a law firm in New York City.

Coates then went into private practice as a federal prosecutor for the United States Department of Justice. She worked as a trial attorney in the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division during the Bush and Obama administrations. Coates was also an Assistant United States Attorney for the District of Columbia.

Laura prosecuted violent felony offenses as an Assistant Attorney, including armed crimes, domestic violence, drug trafficking, child abuse, and sexual assault.

Laura Coates joined CNN as a legal analyst in May 2016. She is currently a senior legal analyst for the news channel. In 2019, she hosted two Oxygen Network documentaries. Coates investigates the mysterious case of the 15-year-old twins’ disappearance in Augusta, Georgia, in one of the documentaries, The Disappearance of the Millbrook Twins.

Laura also hosted Murder and Justice: The Case of Martha Moxley, in which she investigated the death of a 15-year-old girl in Greenwich, Connecticut.
