On November 21, 1943, Larry Mahan, a well-known retired American professional rodeo cowboy, was born in Salem, Oregon. When Larry was inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in the all-around category in 1979, he became well-known.
Larry was just 14 years old when he first began participating in professional rodeo. In 1963, he joined the Rodeo Cowboys Association (RCA) and started participating in rodeos. He won the title five times, from 1966 through 1970 and again in 1973. He won two bull riding world championships and six all-around world titles on the PRCA circuit at the National Finals Rodeo (NFR). The Great American Cowboy won the 1974 Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature for its examination of his 1973 comeback and rivalry with Phil Lyne.
