Despite having a series of New York Times bestsellers, numerous speaking engagements, and such early demand in her most recent works that the first print runs had to be expanded, Sarah Young has struggled to develop a substantial public presence.
The author of the hugely popular Jesus Calling devotional remained in Perth, Western Australia, where she and her husband, Steve, are missionaries with the Presbyterian Church in America (October) when Thomas Nelson launched Jesus Today and the Jesus Calling Bible Storybook this month.
Bio of Sarah Young

Sarah subscribes to reformed teaching and a traditional interpretation of the Bible. She earned a master’s degree in biblical studies and counseling from Covenant Theological Seminary in St. Louis.
She also belongs to the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA), where her husband Stephen is an ordained preacher.
Stephen and Sarah are still working as missionaries for the PCA Mission to the World organization.
Sarah spends a lot of time praying, reading the Bible, and memorizing verses. She particularly enjoys saying daily prayers for every one of her books readers.
Sarah Young’s spiritual writings are her reflections on her daily quiet time of Bible reading, prayer, and journaling. Worldwide, more than 35 million books have been sold.
Update on Sarah Young’s Health and Illness
After getting “intense, expensive therapy” in the US for six months in 2009 after being identified as having two infections linked to Lyme disease, Sarah showed no improvement.
She has also had continuous dizziness for several years. These difficulties influenced the writing of Jesus Today, which follows the same format of first-person instruction from Jesus as her prior three devotionals.
Based on the author’s journals, Jesus Calling was initially published in 2004 and quickly became a best-seller, selling more than 5 million copies.
Since then, 6.5 million copies of it and associated works, such as the devotionals Jesus Lives and Dear Jesus, have been sold.
The 150 devotional postings of Jesus Today, each two pages long, include fifty quotations on hope.
With drawings by Carolina Farias, the devotions in The Jesus Calling Bible storybook are written in the same style as the original adult book but in more understandable language.
Right now, where is Sarah Young?
Young stays out of the spotlight, refuses to interact with reporters on the phone, and is rarely seen. He’s known for being entirely private.
Write an email and wait for a response if you’re a journalist who wants to chat with the elusive Young, whose “Jesus Calling” series of books has, according to her publisher, sold 35 million copies worldwide.
Young, who has a chronic illness, prefers to stay out of the public eye. She is content to write from her Tennessee home and engage with readers only when she feels like it.
In contrast, many of the best-selling Christian writers aggressively market their books via social media, videos, and public appearances.
Young’s career hasn’t been hindered by her lack of a public platform, making it one of the most astonishing publishing achievements in recent memory.
Her most recent book, “Jesus Listens,” which is being published this week by Thomas Nelson, has established her as a New York Times bestseller author. The first million copies are available.
As part of the book’s promotion, Young has written several biographical pieces, one of which explains how “Jesus Calling” came to be.
Young, a graduate of Wellesley College, began writing devotionals in the 1990s while working as an Australian missionary and counselor.
