Three students who died in the vehicle accident on Thursday night were named by the university; they were all 19 years old.
Both Luke and Nicholas were from Richmond and were fellow business management majors. Similarly, Williamsburg resident Joshua Mardis, who also perished in that incident, was enrolled in a communication studies program.
Sadly, the collision happened around 10:30 p.m. on the West Virginia-Virginia state line, and Luke Fergusson, Nicholas Troutman, and Joshua Mardisy perished there and there.
Only two out of the five individuals were able to escape the vehicle after it was discovered to be lodged in a tree.
According to the investigation, the weather was good, and there were no skid or yaw marks on the road surface indicating any evasive movement. The cause of the incident has not yet been determined.

On Friday morning, Tim Mille, vice president of student affairs at JMU, released a statement that said, “It is with a heavy heart and sadness that I write to inform you of the loss of several JMU students from a tragic car accident that occurred last night in West Virginia.”
“Our hearts are broken for these young men, their families, their home communities, and everyone here at JMU whose lives they touched,” reads a statement from JMU posted on their Instagram page in response to the disaster.
They said, “We hope you will keep all five of these families in your hearts. “our other friends’ swift and complete recovery.”
Following the message, numerous students and parents sent their condolences to the parents of the three pupils and asked for prayers for the two still living.
