Her agent has verified that actress Doreen Mantle, best known for her portrayal as Mrs. Warboys in the BBC comedy One Foot In The Grave, has passed away.
Doreen Mantle, the star of One Foot In The Grave, has perished at the age of 97. The actress who was best known for portraying Jean Warboys, the wife of Victor Meldrew’s closest friend, died at her family residence. The British actress of South African descent appeared on the program between 1990 and 2000.
A representative for Doreen confirmed her passing by stating,
“It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of our cherished client, stage, screen, and radio actress Doreen Mantle, aged 97. She passed away in tranquility at home. Two sons, four grandchildren, and one sibling survive her.”
The late actress went on to appear in The Duchess of Duke Street, Casualty, The Bill, Holby City, and Coronation Street throughout her career.
Prior to her demise, Doreen’s final role was a special iteration of One Foot In The Grave – 30 Years of Laughs in which she portrayed Jean. Prior to that, she had a recurring role from 2001 to 2019 on the BBC One series Doctors.
Doreen is also well-known for her portrayal as Joy Fishwick in ten episodes of the ITV serial opera Coronation Street, in which she portrayed the mother of Colin Fishwick, whose identity was stolen by John Stape. She also played the roles of Simone Mannstein and Sylvia Wheeler for four years on the defunct BBC medical drama Holby City.
Doreen has also appeared in numerous films, including the 2017 film 55 Steps, in which she portrayed Eleanor’s mother alongside Helena Bonham Carter and Hilary Swank. In addition, she portrayed Mrs. Shaemen in Barbra Streisand’s film adaptation of Yentl.
In addition to her film career, Doreen is also well-known for her stage work. Death of a Salesman garnered her the prestigious Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role in 1979.
In addition to My Truth and Reconciliation, she appeared in 84 Charing Cross Road at The Ambassadors Theatre and Billy Liar at the Duke of York’s Theatre.
