But after two weeks of marriage, they separated because John was uneasy about the union.
He revealed that he was dating John Reid, the Tamla Motown label manager for the UK, soon after his debut American performance in Los Angeles in 1970.
Then, in 1973, he came out as bisexual in an interview. Prior to that, he had trouble admitting he was gay.
John first claimed to be bisexual because his homosexuality had not been established. However, he changed his mind in 1993 and began coming out as gay.
After that, John began dating Toronto-born director David Furnish in 1993. He had previously worked as an executive in advertising.
John and David were the first couples to establish a civil partnership in the United Kingdom in the year 2005.
Following the legalization of same-sex unions in the UK in March 2014, John and Furnish made the decision to wed.
In Windsor, Berkshire, the pair exchanged vows in the same year, 2014, in front of their closest family and friends.
With almost ten years of marriage, they appear to be content and ideal couple.
