Nico Williams was born in Pamplona to Ghanaian parents who had fled the Liberian Civil War eight years previously and were now refugees in Spain.
Maria Williams is his mother, while Felix Williams is his father.
Maria explained how they had left Ghana and crossed the Sahara without food or water, how they may have been among the dead, and how they had hidden their belongings in the most effective way.
She also described how she and Felix were imprisoned, how they were saved by a lawyer (whose name, alas, he still does not know), and how they managed to return to the place where he was born. He wrote his history there, where else.
The family lost their fluency in English, but according to his brother Iaki in 2021, they were still able to communicate with their relatives in the Twi dialect of the Akan language.
Nico Williams Brother: Meet Iñaki Williams
The older brother of Nico Williams, Iaki Williams Arthur, plays forward for La Liga Club Athletic Bilbao and the Ghanaian national team.
He was raised at Athletic Bilbao’s academy, and he has participated in over 350 first-team games. His almost 240 consecutive appearances set a La Liga record for the most consecutive games played. Williams, a Spaniard of Ghanaian descent, made his full debut in 2016 for Spain’s national football team. He made the decision to be selected for the 2022 World Cup in order to represent Ghana globally.
Williams was given a Basque first name in commemoration of a Caritas Internationalis team member from Bilbao who helped his parents after they landed in Spain in the year of his birth.
Williams appeared in the documentary television series Six Dreams from the 2017–2018 season of Amazon Prime.
Nico Williams Career: How Good Is He?
Williams, a 20-year-old attacking prodigy in the Spanish league, has succeeded in his brief career for both Club and country.
He is prized for the future contributions he will make to his individual sides as a versatile forward with superb ball control who can succeed on both wings. Many clubs in Europe are interested in Williams’ direct style and quickness in beating a player since he is swift and enjoys dribbling with the ball.
He makes effective use of his speed off the ball by making fast bursts into confined spaces and racing shrewdly to assist his teammates in preparation for a potential pass.
